As one of India’s most acclaimed sarod maestros, Debasmita breathes new life into classical Indian music, weaving complex rhythms and melodies that speak directly to the soul. Guest artists join Sura and Debasmita on this journey transcending borders, each emanating from different corners of the globe, bringing unique melodies and rhythms to this symbiosis and promoting cross-cultural harmony through music.
Their collaboration was sparked by a digital encounter when Debasmita witnessed Sura’s captivating solo at the Darbar Festival via stream. Moved by his mastery, she reached out, leading to their first meeting in Delhi in 2019. This meeting was the genesis of a profound artistic synergy, celebrated in their joint performance at the Gambian High Commission in Delhi and blossoming during their seven-month stint at Expo 2020 in Dubai.
This collaboration transcends musical performance, serving as a vibrant dialogue between distinct but interconnected cultures. Sura and Debasmita's joint efforts illuminate the common threads within diverse musical heritages, promoting understanding and appreciation across continents.
Together, they craft a pioneering musical language that respects traditional roots while exploring innovative expressions. Their fusion not only enriches their audiences' experiences but also paves the way for future cross-cultural musical endeavors between these two traditionally twenty-one string instruments. Sura however, has an extra string for ‘luck’, in accordance with his special family customs.
Backed by Arts Council England, 'Melodies Across Continents' has garnered recognition for its innovative approach to cultural exchange. This support underscores the project’s significance in promoting diversity and unity through the arts.
The debut performance at St George’s, Bristol, on November 8th, 2024 was a ground-breaking musical experience that challenged boundaries and celebrated the unity of music. Sura and Debasmita were joined by Spanish cellist Sergio Serra Lopez and Kienou Seydou from Burkina Faso playing percussion.
